Parent-Landlords increasingly helping children who can’t buy
New research reveals that many UK parents are stepping in to support their adult children with housing due to rising property market challenges. The study by Latimer highlights:
- 53% of parents are acting as “Parent Landlords” to help their children save for a home.
- 49% feel financially responsible for assisting their children in buying their first home, though 66% cannot afford to provide financial support.
- Over 54% believe their children won’t enter the property market without help.
While attitudes toward adult children living at home are shifting—23% of parents are happy to support them indefinitely—multi-generational living brings challenges, including privacy concerns (27%) and financial strain (20%). Nearly 32% of parents would not be comfortable with their child’s partner moving in.
Paul Walker of Latimer notes that the “Parent Landlord” trend is a temporary solution, underscoring the financial and emotional strain it can place on families.
