MP insists landlords should never pass on costs to tenants
Green Party MP Carla Denyer expressed surprise that landlords plan to pass on the costs of meeting new energy efficiency standards to tenants. In a Q&A session, Denyer questioned housing minister Matthew Pennycook about the requirement for rental homes to have a minimum Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of C by 2030, which could cost landlords up to £15,000 per property. Denyer found it unacceptable for these costs to be passed on to renters and asked what measures would be taken to prevent this. Pennycook responded that the upcoming Renters Rights Bill would protect tenants from such costs.
