Landlords evenly-split for and against rent controls – poll shock

A shock poll commissioned by a think tank claims that almost even numbers of landlords are for and against rent controls.

The poll – for think tank Common Wealth – surveyed a nationally representative sample of 2,157 people about a range of housing issues. In addition, it polled 4,369 specifically on their views for rent caps.

It found that 44% of landlords expressed support for a cap on rents, compared to 47% who were opposed. Although lower than support in the population at large, (75%) the think tank says β€œthis is a remarkable level of support.”

The same survey found that over two-thirds of respondents supported a tax on second homes to help pay for more social housing; and 62% said Capital Gains Tax should also go up on buy to let properties.
